Career prospects

Academically qualified historians have a good eye for analysing individual cases and, at the same time, a sound understanding of complex interrelationships. A particular strength of graduates of the master’s programme in History is their ability to conduct research in an independent, structured, purposeful and critical way and to present their findings with convincing argumentation. Successfully completing studies in History therefore opens up diverse career paths that draw on the knowledge and skills taught.

Typical professional fields are universities, archives, museums, library services or publishing. Internships and/or stays abroad enable students to acquire additional skills that broaden the range of career paths available to them and to establish important contact links with potential employers. This step already takes place during students’ studies thanks to their own strategic searches for a suitable internship in line with their individual career plans as part of the mandatory internship in the programme’s practical component.

If students wish to continue a career in academia, the master’s degree programme is usually followed by doctoral studies in one of the branches of history. Structured doctoral studies can be pursued at the University of Bamberg within the Bamberg Graduate School of Historical Studies (BaGraHist).
