This second, completely new edition of the editors' book sheds light on the role of the context for career-related decisions and behaviour patterns of self-initiated expatriates, i.e. people who decide to gain professional experience abroad on their own account.

The editors aim to deepen the understanding of careers of self-initiated expatriates, with a focus on the contextual influences of space, time and institutions.

Particularly, they refer to conditions in the home and host countries, such as cultural distance and the influence of language on the experiences of expatriates. In addition, the authors consider the career path of expatriates over time. In this context, the long-term career effect of an experience abroad as well as cultural adaptation over time are examined. A further part is the analysis of the institutional context with regard to professional, organisational and social characteristics. Topics include the foreign experience of expatriates in small and medium-sized companies or the role of professional norms for career success.
