Gameful Innovation Lab

Welcome to the ‘GINI Lab’ - the Gameful Innovation Lab, a unique place where students, external experts and researchers can come together to develop new innovations. Here, playful and game-based solutions are created, which can then be evaluated in controlled experiments, analogue, digital or virtual, with individuals or teams.

To this end, the lab is equipped with a variety of high-tech devices, including powerful computers for the development of 3D applications, sensors, IoT devices, AR and VR devices as well as analogue and digital games - everything needed to develop prototypes and conduct studies.

The laboratory is primarily used to carry out the following activities:

  • Prototype development: playful and game-based prototypes are created here in digital, analogue or hybrid form as part of research projects and seminars.
  • Controlled experiments and studies: The laboratory enables controlled experiments and studies to be carried out with both digital and analogue prototypes. The spectrum ranges from metaverse to augmented reality and virtual reality applications.
  • Observation of group dynamics: The focus is also on observing group dynamics in cooperative, team-oriented and multiplayer games.

OASIS Lab

The OASIS Lab is an immersive 360° theater by Igloo Vision that enables groups of people to explore virtual worlds together.

The circular installation, with a diameter of about six meters, allows for 360-degree projections of videos and 3D environments. The lab is equipped with a high-performance computer featuring modern NVIDIA graphics cards, cameras for tracking the movement of people and objects, and a powerful sound system.

The lab is used in both research and teaching and is intended to serve as an “oasis” for new ideas and student projects, enabling the exploration of new interaction formats between humans and technology, as well as the development of business models for the “metaverse.”

A wide range of opportunities for research and knowledge transfer:

In contrast to VR headsets, the space is particularly well suited for groups of people to enter virtual worlds together. This makes it especially valuable for studying social interactions. Since no special hardware needs to be worn on the body, the system is also ideal for researching physical and sports-related activities. In addition, studies on interactions between groups of people and AI-driven avatars, as well as innovative approaches to immersive data visualization, can be easily realized.
