In 2022, he was awarded the Early Career Award of the German Society for Medical Sociology (DGMS). In 2026, he received a Starting Grant from the European Research Council (ERC) for the research project FIELDS – “Fields of Education as New Drivers of Health Inequalities”.
Research Profile
Marvin Reuter's research lies at the intersection of medical sociology, social epidemiology and the sociology of work. His work focuses on how social, occupational and institutional conditions shape health across the life course and contribute to the emergence of health inequalities. A particular emphasis is placed on working and employment conditions as well as on the role of different educational pathways for health. Methodologically, he primarily works with large longitudinal datasets and quantitative methods for causal analysis.
Current Research Projects
FIELDS – Fields of Education as New Drivers of Health Inequalities (ERC Starting Grant, 2027–2031)
From January 2027, Marvin Reuter will lead the FIELDS research project, funded by the European Research Council with approximately €1.5 million. The project investigates how fields of study and vocational training influence physical and mental health across the life course. It focuses on three potential mechanisms: labour market conditions, health behaviours and social relationships. To this end, six large longitudinal studies from Germany, the United States, the Netherlands, Switzerland, South Korea and Australia will be analysed comparatively.
Occupational Epidemiological Analyses of Selected Infectious Diseases (BAuA F2597)
Since 2025, Marvin Reuter has led a research project commissioned by the Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (BAuA) on occupational differences in the risk of various infectious diseases among the German working population. The project is based on longitudinal data from the German National Cohort (NAKO) and is conducted in collaboration with research partners at Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf and TU Dresden.
German National Cohort (NAKO)
Marvin Reuter is a member of Expert Group 16 “Social and Occupational Factors, Migration” of the German National Cohort (NAKO) and contributes to various analysis and publication projects on social, occupational and migration-related health inequalities.
