The article challenges a common assumption: that research data become visible to researchers as soon as they exist and are made accessible. The authors argue that visibility is not a fixed property of the data. Instead, it emerges from the interplay of technical, social and institutional factors. Using the humanities as an example, they develop the Humanities Research Data Visibility Model (HRDVM). The model distinguishes four modes of access to research data: social interaction, information systems, physical access and scholarly literature. Each mode of access is linked to its own dimension of visibility, which is shaped by specific factors. Based on the model, the authors derive recommendations for research data infrastructures.
