Welcome to the webpage accompanying Chapter 22 "Computing linguistic distances between varieties " by McMahon and Maguire. As you might have already realized, it is a big step from understanding the basic concept presented in the chapter to applying this knowledge in practice. This webpage aims to give you a grasp on basic concepts of the software SplitsTree4 and illustrates some examples which show what the software is capable of doing. In no way should this be considered an in-depth guide for using the NeighborNet algorithm implemented in SplitsTree; this webpage is exclusively designed as a base of additional information and resources for interested students of linguistics.

Note that this webpage  does not provide any information on how to quantify differences between certain dialects or languages. While this is definitely the most research intensive step in a research project that might use SplitsTree4, this webpage only aims to show the program itself. If you are specifically interested in the quantification of dialect and language differences, consider taking a look at the Further Resources page.
