Normalising frequency counts

Parent Previous Next

Raw frequency counts of linguistic features cannot be compared to each other because of the variable lengths of texts. This procedure would not give a reliable result. Therefore, the counts have to be normalised to a common basis and hence rendered comparable. The raw frequency counts should be divided by the total number of words of the text and then multiplied by the chosen basis (cf. Biber, Conrad and Reppen 1998: 263).
