Dimensions of variation

The linguistic co-occurrence patterns that determine registers can be analysed as underlying dimensions of variation. That is, two registers can differ more or less with respect to a certain dimension. Dimensions of variation can be analysed in terms of their linguistic and functional content (cf. Biber and Conrad 2009: 223f.).
