General support

All students need to see their respective academic coordinator as soon as possible after their arrival. Contact them via maeas.englit(at) to make an appointment.

Please be aware that there are a lot of workshops and services on offer for international students that help you settle in and deal with possible problems. On this page, you will find an overview over all services, including:

Obligatory Orientation Meeting

During the week before classes start again, new MA students of English and American Studies need to attend two obligatory appointments.

1. Orientation Meeting
In the meeting, you will be given all kinds of information relevant to your study success in Bamberg. You will also meet some of your professors and your academic advisor. Please note that not attending this meeting can lead to serious problems during the course of your studies!

Next orientation meeting: 09 October, 2019, 9:30-11:00 at U9/01.11

2. Placement Test
This English language proficiency test is obligatory for all new students of the Institute of English and American Studies and you are only exempt from it if you are a native speaker. If you fail to attend the test, you are not allowed to take any courses of the Institute and might have to prolong your course of studies.

Next placement test: Tuesday 08 October, 18:00-20:00 at MG1/00.04

All students need to see their academic advisor within a few days of arrival to discuss their individual study plan with her.

Your academic counsellors: Dr. Susan Brähler (for the Joint Programme) and Dr. Kerstin-Anja Münderlein (for the regular MA)
Please contact: maeas.englit(at)

Support upon Arrival

Since many students struggle with the necessary administration upon arrival, such as opening a bank account, getting a German health insurance, or enrolling at the university, we have hired a student helper to assist you with these issues. If you need any organisational help during your first few days in Bamberg (or later, e.g. when going to the examinations office), please contact our student helper.

If you need help directly upon arrival, please contact the tutor in good time so that he or she can help you plan your trips around the Bamberg authorities.

Your tutors: Janina Lupprian (janina-lupprian(at) and Marcellina Scheller (marcellina.scheller(at)

International Help Desk

A weekly office hour held by one of our student helpers will provide you the opportunity to talk to a fellow student about any study-related problem occuring throughout the semester. Your tutor will help you with problems regarding course or exam registration or provide support with organisational questions, relating for instance to the registrar's office or the examinations office. The Help Desk is open once or twice every week during the whole semester.

Where to find us: building U9, second floor

This workshop provides you with the necessary information about the facilities of the University of Bamberg and the structure of the Institute of English and American Studies. You will learn how to find courses and register for exams and find out about course formats and requirements, and much more information relevant to your studies in Bamberg. We recommend you to take part in this workshop to make your start in Bamberg easier. Your tutor will also help you set up your individual study programme and register for the respective courses.

The workshops are offered every semester in the week preceding the beginning of classes.

Next workshop appointments:

Wednesday, 09 October, 2019, 11:00-17:00 at U9/01.11
Friday, 11 October, 2019, 10:30-16:30

Your tutors: Janina Lupprian and Marcellina Scheller

Workshop Academic Research

This three-part workshop helps you find your way around the library in Bamberg and helps you access the university library catalogue and databases. You will learn about planning and researching presentations and term papers and your tutor will help you stick to the academic standards of the Institute of English and American Studies and maintain academic integrity. This workshop is particularly relevant for those students who have never had to write term papers or give presentations, but we recommend all new students to take part in it.

Please note that the workshop consists of two individual parts and students should attend both appointments. Please bring your own laptops or tablets.

The workshop appointments in the winter semester 2019/20:
Tutorial Academic Research, part I: Saturday, 16 November, 10-13 at KR12/01.05
Tutorial Academic Research, part II: Saturday, 14 December,  10-13 at KR12/01.05

Participate! 2019: Career Day!

This year's winner of our Participate! contest is Phd student Hamedreza Kohzadi with a concept for a full career day helping new and advanced MA students of the regular and the Joint programme along on their career path.

On 9 November 2019, we started off the day at 10 a.m. with a potluck brunch. After that, we had a rountable on career options in academic (specifically focussing on applying for scholarships) and another roundtable on other career opportunities outside the university.

The "Roundtable Academic Career" was moderated by Igor Baldoino and structured by Hamedreza Kohzadi. During this roundtable, a group of panelists (mainly former MA EAS students) shared their experiences in successfully applying for a variety of scholarships with the audience. In addition, Igor Baldoino gave an overview of scholarships available to MA EAS students and future PhD candidates while Hamedreza Kohzadi explained the application procedure exemplarily with the help of his own DAAD scholarship. During the roundtable, the panelists did not only share their own experiences but also answered questions from the audience.

The "Roundtable Alumni and post-MA perspectives" was organised and moderated by Touhid Chowdhury, who has organised former students of the MA EAS to serve as panelists and share their experiences in qualified jobs outside of university. The roundtable will also serve to kick off the new MA EAS Alumni Association, which is currently being formed. To this effect, Touhid Chowdhury distributed questionnaires asking about people's interest in alumni work, which you can find here(32.8 KB).

Throughout the whole day, the Career Orientation Service was staffed by Igor Baldoino, who provided individual advice on career opportunities after the MA EAS. Moreover, our student helpers Marcellina Scheller and Alexander Feitenhansl were at hand to help you with organisational or infrastructural questions (Marcellina) or questions of academic research (Alexander).

The event was officially opened and presided over by the head of the examination boar of the MA EAS, Prof. Dr. Christoph Houswitschka, and co-organised by the MA EAS coordinators, Dr. Susan Brähler (Joint Programme) and Dr. Kerstin-Anja Münderlein (regular MA).

Here are some picture of the event:

Video Campaign (Contest 2017)

In early 2017, Abdo Roumani developed the idea to introduce and explain the Joint Master's Degree in English and American Studies to an even wider programme through a video campaign. Abdo produced several videos, a description of the Joint Degree including its requirements , information on the obligatory mobility semester in the Joint Degree, and one video on studying and living in Bamberg.

Winner: Abdo Roumani

Note: Although there has been a change in the European Joint Master's Programme, the videos are still up to date. The change only concerns the conferral of the diploma. As of 2018 most of the mobility universities confer a double degree together with Bamberg.
