Dr. Jesús Pacheco Martinez: "Microseismic measurements applied to the structural analysis of heritage buildings"

Vibration analysis is a method first applied in the aeronautical industry, as a diagnostic technique to detect incipient damage or manufacturing defects. Today the method helps civil engineering to evaluate changes in structural behavior, as a complementary technique to visual inspection. Microseismic measurements are used to evaluate changes in the dynamic behavior of affected infrastructure elements that have been repaired or reinforced, to analyze structures such as bridges. By measuring vibrations from environmental noise, particular characteristics as well as the dynamic properties of the investigated structure (e.g. frequency, amplitude, mode shapes, damping ratio etc.) can be determined. The presentation will focus on the utilization of vibration logs for the assessment and detection of structural damage in heritage structures.

Dr. Jesús Pacheco Martinez is full professor at the Civil Engineering department of the Universidad Autónoma de Aguascalientes in Mexico, and has been invited as Guest Professor of Bamberg University by the Digital Geoarchaeology group to participate in the IVGA and DDT jointly organized International Summer School “Monitoring Heritage 2018”.
