2.1 The auditory method

Parent Previous Next

With the auditory method, speakers are recorded while reading out certain words or utterances. Afterwards, the researcher listens to the recording and indicates which syllable of a word he/she perceives as prominent/stressed (Gut 2013: 245). In consequence, this method is not very reliable since agreement between researchers is low. It has also proved to be not very valid. On the other hand, this method is quite easy to carry out and is not very time-consuming. Another problem is that even the word stress of speakers of the same region can vary (Gut 2013: 245). Therefore, a minimum number of speakers should be defined, which is necessary in order to receive reliable results.
