2.1.2 Spectrum

Parent Previous Next

There are more ways to deal with sound than just looking at the waveform. The spectrum of a sound is the whole range of frequencies and harmonics which sound together at one point in time. The spectrogram gives a good impression of the spectrum of a sound or utterance. It represents time from left to right on the horizontal axis, frequencies on the vertical axis and amplitudes by color. High amplitudes are shown as dark shades, low amplitudes have a brighter color. By looking at the spectrogram and the oscillogram of a sound we can simultaneously follow the development of the two spectra (cf. Reetz 2003).
