Call for Papers: closed

War, trauma, and disease have shaped and continue to shape human history and experience in a myriad of ways. In 2018, for example, we will be commemorating the centennial of the end of the First World War. At the same time, each year sees the publication of new novels, autobiographies, movies, and even video games about past, present, and possible future wars and the trauma they generate. It is fair to say, then, that these topics remain central to the literatures and cultures of different nations and continue to be prolific subjects across various genres and media. Consequently, scholarly interest in these themes remains high across a great variety of disciplines and areas of research.

The Bamberg Graduate School of Literary, Cultural and Media Studies (BaGraLCM), in cooperation with the departments of English Literature and American Studies at the University of Bamberg, is hosting an interdisciplinary conference on war, trauma, and disease in past and present from March 9 to March 11, 2018. The conference organizers invite proposals of up to 300 words for individual papers of 20 minutes from scholars working in Literary and Cultural Studies, the Medical Humanities, Gender Studies, Psychology, Medicine, and History.

Topics may include but are certainly not limited to historical and contemporary representations of war, trauma, disease, and catastrophe in

  • Fiction
  • Poetry
  • Life writing
  • Film and TV
  • Video games
  • Music and music videos
  • Art
  • Journalism

Applicants will soon be informed about their participation.
