Excursion to DATEV in Nuremberg

Right in the middle of the excursion with around 20 students from Information Systems, Computer Science, Applied Computer Science, International Information Systems Management, and Computing in the Humanities at DATEV in Nuremberg: the IT service provider for the tax consulting and auditing industry gave a multifaceted insight into its fields of work, corporate convictions and working methods.

The students learned a lot about the data centre black box as well as the latest hacking developments and DATEV's cyber security methods. Chief Operating Officer and Chief Human Resources Officer Julia Bangerth also illustrated how the cooperative is positioned in terms of equal rights, work-life balance and sustainability. Highlights for many participants were the tour of the buildings with innovative workplace concepts and the discussion round with seven former Bamberg students!

Master's student of Applied Computer Science Alisa Münsterberg summarised the day very positively: "I thought it was great that we had the opportunity to get to know so many employees with very different backgrounds - including at the University of Bamberg. You often get the impression that straightforward CVs are better received by large companies, which can be off-putting, but that was nicely refuted here. I also found it interesting that they are focussing on alternative work concepts - I would personally like a fixed desk, but the hanging chairs and couch landscapes are very inviting."

The excursion was organised by the Women's Office at the WIAI faculty. The organisation offers company visits to exciting companies every two years to provide students with insights into computer science practice and concrete contacts with future employers.

This summer term's last central examination is also a premiere! On Monday, a large e-exam was held for the first time at the University of Bamberg on specially prepared examination laptops.

Almost 250 information systems and computer science students came to Kapellenstraße 13 to take the exam "Introduction to Computers and Operating Systems" on laptops. To ensure that the whole thing works well and securely, the Chair for Privacy and Security in Information Systems (PSI) of Prof. Dr. Dominik Herrmann has developed the PSI-Exam examination system. With it, computer-based examinations can be conducted with low effort and fail-safe - without a huge PC pool and thus very flexible in terms of location. The special feature: all the programmes pre-installed on the computers were permitted aids in the examination. This makes it possible to set much more practical tasks and "programming on paper" is now a thing of the past in computer science.

And how does an e-examination work? The exam is processed in the browser and provided by a web server that runs directly on the exam laptops. Power or network failures during the exam are therefore no problem. To ensure that web access is restricted in line with the exam, the laptops are in an isolated WLAN controlled by a laptop at the exam invigilator (in the case of a remote exam, there would be corresponding firewall rules). The solutions entered by the students are saved on the SSDs of the laptops as well as on USB sticks and continuously transmitted to the invigilator's computer in the background.

QR codes and checksums are used to activate the examinations and assign them to the examinees. When all examiners have completed their examinations, two additional backup copies are made of all examinations submitted. The exams are ready for correction. And this is more convenient and quicker for the examiners than is the case when correcting analogue exams.

To ensure that the students were not overwhelmed by the new exam situation, an explanatory video was made available in advance, and students were allowed to bring their own mouse to make it easier to use - in addition, there was a mock exam for practice just two months beforehand.

Risk of contagion: Digital stress influences colleagues

When individuals suffer from digital stress, it often affects others in the work team. Because it is contagious, according to a recent study.

The potential for contagion has now been demonstrated by Prof. Dr Tim Weitzel and Lea Reis from the Chair of Information Systems and Services, together with Prof. Dr Christian Maier (LMU Munich) as part of the research network 'ForDigitHealth'. "It happens automatically when we meet our social environment with empathy and sympathy," explains Tim Weitzel.

The good news: we are not helplessly at the mercy of the risk of contagion! To counteract the transfer of stress, it helps to consciously distance oneself from one's own emotional reaction to others - in the case of cognitive contagion, it is helpful to acquire a strengthened self-confidence in one's own IT skills and to realise that one can cope with the situation oneself.

More valuable tips and results from the joint research project 'ForDigitHealth' are available free of charge as an online guide to dealing with digital stress: https://gesund-digital-leben.de/ergebnisse-2/digitaler-stress-der-wegweiser/

In the joint project of the universities of Augsburg, Bamberg, Erlangen-Nuremberg, Munich and Würzburg, experts from medicine, communication science, psychology, computer science and business informatics conducted interdisciplinary research for four years. 'ForDigitHealth' was funded by the Bavarian State Ministry for Science and the Arts with a total of 3.4 million euros.

Exciting business ideas for a digital world

At the Pitch Night, 16 students in four teams presented their business plans and prototypes for a new digital business idea.

Digital solutions for the following problems were presented and discussed with the audience:

📱 weCARE: The first team addresses the problem of being overwhelmed in the "management of administrative tasks" after the death of relatives >> through digital death care, the app weCare supports bereaved families in important decision-making processes.

📱 FINCLU: The second team proposes a solution to address the loss of members of local associations and the desire for easier access to leisure activities in the region >> a platform was developed for "leisure networking" with associations, groups and people in the region

📱 Bargain: Team 3 addresses the problem that many vouchers remain unused when shopping >> a digital wallet for voucher management and voucher trading was developed

📱 Matchhive: How do we solve housing shortages in the region? >> Team 4 has designed a matching platform for shared housing that connects landlords, existing tenants and potential new flatmates.

The project management team around Prof. Dr. Daniel Beimborn, David Zurek, Elias Grewe and Ferdinand Mittermeier (Chair of Information Systems, especially Information Systems Management) was very positively impressed by the students' ideas, commitment and initiative. Since this project is a contrast to the often very theoretical lecture content at university, the students are often faced with new challenges: From finding a real customer problem to independently developing and testing a prototype to creating a first business model, they were all able to master them.

The final event of the project 'Digital Entrepreneurship' was organised in cooperation with Digital.Fabrik GmbH, sponsored by the medium-sized company CHSN and the Office of Innovation and Entrepreneurship (BIG) of the University of Bamberg.
