Interlibrary Loan

Interlibrary Loan makes it possible to ask for literature that is not available in Bamberg to be sent to your preferred branch library. Participating libraries adhere to the Interlibrary Loan Guidelines for Germany (Ordnung des Leihverkehrs in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland(77.5 KB), LVO) of the year 2003.

If you have any questions, you may ask your librarian, call the Interlibrary Loan office at (0951) 863-1570 or email them at fernleihe.ub(at)uni-bamberg.de.

Please watch the online tutorial on Interlibrary Loan as well! [German only]

Literature for academic work, vocational or continuous professional training that is not available on site can be requested via Interlibrary Loan and will be sent to your preferred branch library.

Please note that not all items listed in the Library Catalogues can be requested via Interlibrary Loan.

The exceptions are:

  • Media that is available in Bamberg, even if they cannot be checked out or if they are currently checked out;
  • media that can be purchased in a bookstore at a low price (of up to 15 euros);
  • archived items of official bodies;
  • and newspaper articles.

The following items may not be available via Interlibrary Loan:

    • Media that are especially valuable, particularly those that were published before 1800;
    • Media that have a peculiar format;
    • Media that are in bad condition;
    • Loose-leaf editions and unbound periodicals as well as entire magazine volumes;
    • School and text books and other media that are widely used;
    • Non-books if mailing such items would endanger their condition;
    • Reference collections and course reserves;
    • Media that provide basic or really practical knowledge.

    Generally, the following items cannot be ordered via Interlibrary Loan:

    • DIN norms and guidelines of the Association of German Engineers (VDI);
    • Magister theses and final papers in teacher-training courses;
    • Newspaper volumes.

    Within Germany, books are generally delivered for free. For copies of essays and international Interlibrary Loans, fees apply.

    Unless otherwise stated on the form, when you submit your request, you automatically agree to pay costs of up to 10 euros.

    In the best case scenario, your order will be handled within one week. Generally, it's two weeks. However, in some cases, it can take significantly longer, especially for hold requests and for items from abroad.

    Please make your Interlibrary Loan request early on!

    • Always start off with just a few keywords; afterwards limit your search if your result list is too long.
    • If possible, use only significant keywords contained in the book or magazine title.
    • Look for authors by name. Enter their last name first, followed by their first name. Do not use titles!
    • Use the question mark ? as a truncation symbol to include compound words or word endings in your search. Please do not use abbreviations without truncating them!
