Course registration Business English - Summer semester 2019

The registration process for Business English courses begins by making selections in FlexNow--this opens on Monday, 25 March 2019 at 10:00, and will close on Tuesday, 23 April 2019 at 23:59. Then, allocation of students to courses occurs on Wednesday, 24 April 2019. Any students who end up on the waiting list should come to the Wirtschaftsenglisch offices on Thursday, 25 April 2019.

  • Although effectively there is no time advantage, you are encouraged to make your FlexNow selections promptly and as early as possible. If your timetable should change, you would still be able to amend the FlexNow selections you have made before the cut-off date.

Continue reading for a detailed description of the whole procedure.

When do courses start?

All Business English courses start teaching in the week beginning 29th April 2019 (calendar week 18). This may mean that you need to make course selections before you arrive at the university—make sure you have access to your TANS.

  • Please note that lecturers cannot register you for courses via email and such requests will not be processed.
  • Please check carefully the Modulhandbuch des Sprachenzentrums for an explanation as to which Business English courses are involved in each Wirtschaftsenglisch module and which semesters they are offered in.
  • Erstis: Do you really need to take a Business English course in your first semester? Consider your priorities carefully before making any selections. Remember that your degree programme may mean that you will spend one or more semesters abroad.
  • All courses offered by the Wirtschaftsenglisch department are parallel courses e.g. Business English II: Finance is offered some fifteen times during the week in SS19, but you only need to attend one instance of these fifteen courses for the duration of the semester.

How do I register?

Step 1 - Registration selections

You make registration selections through FlexNow—this applies to Erasmus students too:

  • Opens: Monday, 25 March 2019 at 10:00
  • Closes: Tuesday, 23 April 2019 at 23:59

The FlexNow system requires you to make 3 selections from the parallel courses on offer.

  • FlexNow will reject your request if you make one or two selections only.

Within a few minutes, you receive an email from FlexNow acknowledging your request to be registered in one of these selections.

Please note: This email simply confirms your registration selections—actual allocation to one of your selections occurs in step 2.

  • If you do not receive an email from FlexNow, then your attempt to make selections has been unsuccessful--try again.
  • If the problem persists, do reach out for assistance

If you are taking more than one Business English course then avoid double-booking yourself when making your selections. For example, when making selections for Business English II: Finance and Business English IV: Organisational Behaviour, to avoid any risk of being double-booked, you would have to make selections that involve six unique day/time combinations.

When making your three selections per course, only choose those day/times that you know you have space in your timetable for.

If you need to change the selections you have made, you can do so up to the closing date. Open up the relevant course in FlexNow:

  • Delete the three selections you made
  • Enter in the three selections you need
  • If you encounter difficulties, do reach out for assistance

Step 2 - Course allocation

FlexNow allocates students to specifc courses based on the selections that they made. You will receive a final confirmation email from FlexNow on Wednesday afternoon, 24th April 2019, which reads either:

a)      You received a Business English place. This email contains your details...

b)      Your Business English selections were unsuccessful. Come to our offices-ERBA 5th floor-tomorrow, Thu 25 Apr, from 09:30-11:00. Bring along this FlexNow email and your timetable-we will assign you to a course with free spaces.

Registration has closed and I didn't get a place! Now what?

The following students are invited to come to the Wirtschaftsenglisch offices—ERBA, 5th floor—on Thursday 25th, April, from 09:30 to 11:00am:

  • Students who received an "unsuccessful" email from FlexNow (see above);
  • Erasmus or overseas students, if FlexNow did not offer registration selections for Wirtschaftsenglisch.

NOTE: The queue is usually short and fast-moving. We will typically be able to assign you to a course that fits conveniently with your existing timetable.

  • We are unable to accept third party requests for places in courses.

All other students who need to attend a Business English course, but whose registration efforts somehow failed, should come to the Wirtschaftsenglisch offices—ERBA, 5th floor—on Thursday 25th, April, from 12:00 to 13:00pm. Amongst others, this queue typically includes students who:

  • forgot to take or use their TAN numbers on holiday (TAN - Kontakt Studierendenkanzlei / TAN - Prüfungsamt FAQs);
  • forgot to register during the FlexNow registration period;
  • encountered "technical difficulties" and were insufficiently proactive in trying to resolve them;
  • forgot to bring along their "unsuccessful" FlexNow email in the morning.

NOTE: Avoid ending up in this queue! We will only be able to assign you to one of the few Business English spaces remaining: typically, there is little flexibility regarding your timetable.

  • We are unable to accept third party requests for places in courses.
