The structure of the Psychology B.Sc. degree programme

The B.Sc. degree programme in Psychology at the University of Bamberg has a polyvalent orientation. It qualifies the students for various psychological professions. If they complete the respective professional internships during their B.Sc. studies, the graduates will fulfil the requirements needed for entering an M.Sc. degree programme in Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy (according to the PsychThApprO).

The Psychology B.Sc. degree programme comprises different modules, each related to a subject area of psychology.  There are 19 required and two required elective modules as well as two professional internships (orientation internship, qualifying internship 1).

Each module comprises various courses that you can find in the module handbook. To complete a module successfully you have to do a term paper, a written exam, an oral examination or a presentation. It may also be necessary to complete a corresponding examination at the end of individual courses within a module.

The qualifying internship 1 is not embedded in a specific semester; it can take place at any time during the B.Sc. Psychology program, preferably during the lecture-free periods. Starting the qualifying internship 1, however, is not possible before you have achieved 60 ECTS.

The different modules typically extend over 2 semesters (i.e. one year) each. However, a few exceptions take only one semester: the required modules Statistics 1 and Research Methods, Introduction to Psychology (1st semester) and Statistics 2 (2nd semester). The two required elective modules can be chosen from a wide range covering different areas of psychology (e.g., Biopsychology; Introduction to Cognitive Neuroscience; Applied Developmental Psychology; School Psychology and Counselling; Applied Health Sciences; Thinking and Acting in Complex Situations; Applied Occupational and Organizational Psychology; for a full list, see module handbook).

Im ersten Studienjahr werden die Pflichtmodule Einführung in die Psychologie, ihre Geschichte und ethische Grundlagen, Allgemeine Psychologie 1 (Wahrnehmung; Angewandte Kognitionspsychologie), Allgemeine Psychologie 2 (Kognition und Sprache; Motivation, Emotion und Lernen), Persönlichkeitspsychologie, Biologische Psychologie und medizinische Grundlagen 1, Statistik 1 und Forschungsmethoden sowie Statistik 2 absolviert. Im zweiten Studienjahr sind die Pflichtmodule Sozialpsychologie, Entwicklungspsychologie, Pädagogische Psychologie, Psychologische Diagnostik: Grundlagen, Empiriepraktikum sowie Klinische Psychologie 1: Störungslehre vorgesehen. Im dritten Studienjahr sind zwei Wahlpflichtmodule, die 12 ECTS umfassende Bachelor-Arbeit und die Pflichtmodule Klinische Psychologie 2: Psychotherapeutische Verfahren, Psychologische Diagnostik: Vertiefung sowie Gesundheitspsychologie und medizinische Grundlagen 2 zu absolvieren.

Students who successfully graduate in the Psychology B.Sc. degree programme, and who have completed both professional internships in institutions of psychosocial care fulfil the requirements for admission to an M.Sc. degree programme with a clinical-psychological focus. They also fulfil the requirements for admission to a “non-clinical” M.Sc. degree programme in Psychology.

Mentor system and tutorials

Each professor is a mentor to a group of about ten students whom they will personally accompany through the start of their studies.

Participation in a mentoring group is mandatory for all students. Please register for your mentoring course. Then we will assign you to one of the mentoring groups.

Advanced students offer various tutorials to make it easier for beginners to take their first steps at the university. There are several subject-related courses of this type, which you can find in the UnivIS. For beginners, two tutors are additionally available as contact persons.
