Profile of the Course

The M.A. course in Islamic Art and Archaeology at the University of Bamberg is the only degree programme at a German university to offer a combination of art and archaeology of the Islamic World. It teaches an overview of the material and relevant scholarly methods of this field. It includes training in one of the principal languages of the Islamic Middle East (Arabic, Persian, Turkish), which can be credited in the flexible segment (Erweiterungsbereich) of the programme. In the practice module, students gather experience in museum work, in field research (e. g. archaeological excavation) and in studying originals on trips to sites and museums. In all, the M.A. course aims at developing the competence to perform scholarly work on limited topics, as proven in the M.A. thesis. By studying a particular field in more depth, students develop their own focus of research.
