Structure of the programme

The programme consists of four module groups with different objectives and a total of 15 modules. In the first part of the programme, specialist knowledge is taught in 8 basic modules in a fixed selection of subjects, creating the conditions for in-depth study and application. In the second part of the programme, compulsory electives are offered in 3 in-depth modules and 3 assigned profiling modules, with each of which the students can choose between several subject orientations, in which they can acquire in-depth knowledge, in-depth assessment ability and practice-oriented application competence and develop their own research approaches. 

Module group "Core"

Students are introduced to the subjects relevant to the application of digital technologies in the preservation of historical monuments:

  • Digital Cultural Heritage Technologies
  • Informatics in Monument Preservation
  • Digital Object Recording (3D imaging techniques: 3D scanning, photogrammetry/structure from motion)
  • Digital Archiving
  • Signal Analysis
  • Construction Physics in Cultural Heritage
  • Historic Structures and Materials
  • Virtual Modeling (3D data post-processing)

All core modules are compulsory modules and serve to gain an overview of the subjects involved in the course and to acquire specialist knowledge in the subjects constituting digital heritage technologies.

The basic modules 1-5 are offered in the winter semester, the basic modules 6-8 in the summer semester.

Module group "Advanced"

The students choose three modules with the following main focuses:

  • Digital Modelling - advanced (contents: spatial modelling and BIM, simulation of supporting structures)
  • Digital Analysis/Monitoring/Structural Damage Analysis - advanced (contents: monitoring with digital recording systems, structural analysis and combination of digital recording systems, digital technologies in restoration sciences, building physics evaluation and refurbishment)
  • Information & Network Technologies - consolidation (contents: networking of digital technologies at cultural monuments, participation technologies/web technologies)
  • Knowledge Transfer and Public Engagement - consolidation

At the same time, the associated technical orientation is also determined in the practice- and research-oriented profiling modules. The in-depth modules serve to impart specialist knowledge and to prepare the content of the profiling offers.

The advanced modules 9-11 are taken in the summer semester.

Module group "Specialist"

The students select the three modules that fit to the completed consolidation courses: from one offer:

  • Digital Modelling - specialist
  • Digital Analysis/Monitoring/Structural Damage Analysis - specialist
  • Information & Network Technologies - specialist
  • Knowledge Transfer and Public Engagement - specialist

In the specialistmodules, the digital technologies will be applied to practical examples from current research. The aim is to acquire the ability to evaluate, to apply and to network.
