The Digital Geoarchaeology Group (IVGA) has been complementing the courses offered by the archaeology department at the University of Bamberg since 2010. Our focus is on the activities of former inhabitants of a cultural area. With the aim of minimal archaeological destruction, a combination of scientific and digital techniques for the spatial analysis of settlement patterns are applied to interpret historical changes of a landscape.
In order to understand settlement activity, data collection by photogrammetric and geophysical means regarding topography and subsoil, as well as borehole investigations, try to understand the former settling activity through soils and sediments. Regionally complemented by active and passive remote sensing methods, and the integration of archaeological data into GIS, the information can be brought into a supraregional context regarding topics such as climate change, migratory movements, and the conservation of cultural landscapes.
A modern, internationally well-connected addition to the established archaeological disciplines in Bamberg, Digital Geoarchaeology builds on a dialogue and cooperation, and also sees itself as an interface to the subjects of applied computer science, historical and physical geography, and heritage sciences.
Teaching digital geoarchaeology is represented on the one hand by a strongly applied side, internships and exercises for the learning of special analysis techniques as well as a theoretical one, with the intention to address archaeological topics from a scientific point of view. The profile of digital geoarchaeology is made clear by its teaching and research.
