A look behind ethnographic maps: Statistical knowledge production and the visualization of ethnic groups

In spite of the deconstruction of cartographic knowledge in the course of the spatial turn and the disclosure of the power-knowledge network of geographical and cartographic knowledge productions, ethnographic maps were and are often only superficially analyzed. For the mapping of ethnic or better ethnified groups was usually based on their statistical measurement. Since the middle of the 19th century, the international statistical scientific community has been debating the question of correctly applied nationality statistics - among German-speaking statisticians in the 20th century soon also 'statistics on ethnicity'. These debates and the subsequent surveys had a considerable influence on the production of ethnographic maps. The statistical data collected were the raw material, so to speak, which was subsequently translated into maps.

As part of the Geographical Colloquium, the Chair of Historical Geography cordially invites you to a lecture by Philipp Kröger M.A. (University of Augsburg). The lecture takes a critical look behind ethnographic maps, mainly from the German-speaking area, and wants to make their complex production process visible with a view to statistical data production.
