Special Crops in History and Present - Cultural Heritage in Climate Change

Agriculture is the oldest and still dominant form of land use in Germany - and one of the most important drivers of cultural landscape development. The cultivation of special crops stands out because it is associated with a large number of particularly far-reaching impacts on the natural balance and can shape entire regions economically, socially and visually. In addition, areas with special crops have a particularly large number of distinctive historical structures and elements. 

The Arbeitskreis für historische Kulturlandschaftsforschung in Mitteleuropa e.V. (ARKUM), the Landesamt für Denkmalpflege Hessen - hessenARCHÄOLOGIE, the Landschaftsverband Rheinland and the Kompetenzzentrum Kulturlandschaft (KULT) of Geisenheim University are therefore focusing on the historical development of the cultivation of special crops, their heritage and key challenges for the future at a joint conference in Wiesbaden. 

The event will address questions about the emergence and spread of special crops. In addition, the significance of the cultural heritage in special crop areas will be examined: which older structures still exist and can they be dealt with in the sense of preserving the cultural landscape? Based on this, questions of special crops in climate change and adaptation strategies will be addressed.
