Please be aware: Whenever new federal guidelines for dealing with the Corona pandemic are announced, they first have to be translated into state law in the individual federal states. If corresponding general regulations are established for Bavaria, specific regulations for the Bavarian universities and colleges may also result. This process usually takes a few days before detailed, legally binding regulations are issued. As soon as the university executive board is aware of new developments or the executive board passes new resolutions itself, we will inform you immediately on these pages. Until then, the most recent information communicated and published here applies to the University of Bamberg.

Quarantine and protective measures

If you have been infected with the coronavirus, and if you have not done so already, please immediately contact

  • the public health authorities (by telephone at 0951/85-651 or 0951/9722) and
  • the Office of the Academic Registrar (by telephone via 0951/863-1024 or by email studierendenkanzlei(at)uni-bamberg.de
  • the instructors whose courses you have attended and
  • Frau Ziegmann (by telephone via 0951/863-1096 or per e-Mail, mirjam.ziegmann@uni-bamberg.de).

If you send an email, please include the following information:

  • When and where did your last physical contact with a university employee or fellow student occur at the university?
  • If a physical contact occured in the three weeks prior to your diagnosis, please include, insofar as this information is known to you, a list of names and contact information of the persons concerned.

Please be sure to also include your own complete contact information (particularly your telephone number).

After you report that you have contracted the coronavirus and inform us of your physical contacts, the university’s Executive Administrative Unit for Safety will coordinate further action with the health authorities, if necessary. If you have taken an in-person examination, the Office of Examinations will provide the Safety unit with the lists of participants and seating arrangements for the respective examination and will immediately send persons involved with that examination an email alert. Any required measures (e.g. quarantine) are ordered by the public health authorities, with which the Safety unit is in close and direct contact. This will ensure that all affected contact persons are promptly notified.

The Executive Administrative Unit for Safety or the public health authorities will contact you as soon as possible. Please follow their advice and instructions.

Under the current circumstances, the University management is particularly concerned with protecting and preserving the health of all members of the University – and especially you as a student. For the implementation of in-person teaching and other operations, this means you should:

  • Strictly observe all corona-related protective measures (see FAQ on the current situation page).
  • Observe minimum distancing requirements and current mask regulations (see FAQ below).
  • Please also support all measures for recording contact details (by entering them in VC companion courses , scanning your student card when using the branch libraries or registering online via smartphone or laptop during other visits) in order to be able to trace contacts as quickly and accurately as possible in the event of infection and to combat the broader spread of the coronavirus.

Due to the Corona pandemic, there may be entry restrictions for foreign students. We therefore recommend that you inform yourself carefully before entering Germany or Bavaria. For this purpose we have listed the most important sources of information for you.

Courses and practical courses

The 2021/2022 winter semester lecture period is going to start on 18 October 2021 and going to end on 11 February 2022. If there are any changes in this regard, we will inform you immediately.

In order to ensure high quality in online teaching, the university management and teaching staff have drawn up conditions under which digital formats are to be exploited, for example by

1) Use of the Virtual Campus

All instructors are urged to make increased and targeted use of the diverse possibilities offered by the Virtual Campus for course planning, course design and exchange with students participating in their lectures, seminars and practical courses. Information on planning, scheduling and course progression should also be communicated as early as possible via the Virtual Campus.

2) Computing Centre Offerings

Additionally, the University of Bamberg Computing Centre provides further simple tools and tutorials with which you can, for example, hold virtual meetings with instructors, chat and work on assignments individually or cooperatively.

3) Courses Offered by the Virtuelle Hochschule Bayern

Take advantage of the courses offered by the Virtuellen Hochschule Bayern (vhb)! The vhb provides and manages a range of courses designed and taught by scholars from Bavarian universities. University of Bamberg subject groups are required to ensure that their examining boards generously recognise and approve courses completed at the vhb and concluded with examinations.

The pages of the university's data security officer contain important German-language information on data protection and privacy in the context of digital teaching. Please note the guidelines for online and hybrid teaching.

If possible, required internships that are planned or already underway should be suspended and postponed. Ideally, they should be postponed until the next semester break in order to avoid the dual burden of an internship and course work. If this is not possible, due for example to existant internship agreements or loss of your internship position, contact your instructors as early as possible to arrange a plan for independently making up missed work or course material. In such a case, please make particular use of the online course offering of the Virtuelle Hochschule Bayern (vhb) or the online offerings of your subject area, which are increasingly being offered by all teaching units at least at the beginning of the semester.

If the maximum allowed duration of study is exceeded due to the cancellation of internships, please submit a request for an extension of the maximum duration of study to your degree programme's examining board.

A solution has been developed for the obligatory 6-week pre-study internship in the bachelor's degree programme in education. For further information, please contact the Office of the Registrar by email.

School Internships
The Internship Office is in close contact with the Ministry of Education. A solution is being worked on. Students in teacher training programmes will be informed about internship and school-specific regulations in due course.

As per § 2 of the university's Corona Statutes (Corona-Satzung), deviations from course and examination formats are permissible if the originally intended teaching and/or examination format cannot be carried out as planned due to the corona crisis. In this case, the planned teaching and/or examination format may be replaced by a suitable alternative format. Three variations are possible

  • Variation 1: The instructor opts for a different examination form and announces this no later than four weeks after the start of the lecture period;
  • Variation 2: As a precaution, the instructor specifies a second, alternative examination format. The final decission on which of the two possibilities will be held must be communicated at least four weeks before the planned examination date;
  • Variation 3: If, contrary to expectations, an examination cannot be conducted in the intended form, further deviations are permitted in "particularly justified exceptional cases". This variation is only intended for absolute emergencies and requires the express approval of the responsible dean of studies.

Students must be notified of any deviations from variations 1 and 2 by no later than 4 weeks after the start of the lecture period. Students must be notified of deviations in variation 3 at least 4 weeks before the planned examination date.

Study organisation and service

The Academic Registrar's Office is closed to the public. Questions will be answered by telephone or e-mail.

All applications for enrolment must be sent in writing or posted at the university's post office, Kapuzinerstraße 16. The documents will then be sent by post. Please be aware of the registration deadline.

Applicants who wish to commence studies in the 2020/2021 winter semester and in the 2021 summer semester in master's degree programmes which require verification of successful completion of the undergraduate course to begin studies will be granted a period of grace until the end of the first semester of the programme.

The Bavarian Parliament passed the Second Corona Emergency Act (Corona-Eilgesetz II) on 23 March 2021. This stipulates that the Bavarian Higher Education Act regulations concerning both the individual standard programme duration and examinations valid for the summer semester 2020 will also apply to the past 2020/21 winter semester and the upcoming 2021 summer semester.

The aim is to continue to prevent financial and examination-related disadvantages for students with regard to semester-specific deadlines and periods as well as BAföG entitlement.

Accordingly, the winter semester 2020/2021 and summer semester 2021 will not be considered semesters of study with regard to the standard dates and deadlines specified in the university examination regulations. This also means that in case of non-attendance for examinations, no repetition opportunities will be lost. In addition, the introduction of the individual standard programme duration will remove hurdles to BAföG funding.

Similarly, the 2020/2021 winter semester and 2021 summer semester will not count towards the maximum duration of study. This means that students may study for the maximum allowed duration of study plus one additional semester without having to apply for an extension of the period of study.

Consultation appointments should take place via telephone or e-mail in order to further impede any chains of infection. 

In addition to online consultation, appointments in person are also possible. The prerequisite for the latter is that the corresponding meetings take place in premises where infection control is ensured and infection protection is guaranteed.

Should you urgently require original signatures from university staff during the period of the unversity's closure, please proceed as follows:

  • Completely fill in your application / forms etc. and sign them if required.
  • If you do not already have the requrired documents, request these from the responsible office and indicate your concern, your student registration number and your name.
  • Create a scan of the completed document. If no scanner is available, a photo is sufficient.
  • Send the scan/photo to the university employee whose signature you require and ask that person to sign it and send the signed document back to you in digital form.
  • In some cases, it may be more expedient for the signing employee to forward the signed document directly to the person or institution for whom the document is intended. If necessary, please consult with the signing employee about this option in advance.

Due to the 14th Bavarian Infection Protection Measures Act the “3G rule” will apply in all branch libraries from 2nd September on. To access our libraries one of the following verifications will be necessary:

  • proof of a complete vaccination (last vaccination at least 14 days ago)
  • an official proof of recovery (the illness occurred no more than six months ago)
  • proof of a negative PCR-test (no older than 48 hours) or rapid antigen-test (no older than 24 hours)

Wearing of a medical face mask is mandatory in all branch libraries. You may take off the mask at your desk.

We kindly ask you to obey the following rules:

  • Please desinfect your hands when entering a branch libray.
  • Please keep a minimum distance of 1.50 meters to other people.
  • The group study rooms remain closed.
  • The lending of books occurs contactless via the self-service shelves and self-service checkouts.

You can find the opening hours and the current number of available workstations on the University Library websites. Due to the distancing regulations, the number of workplaces is limited. Library users are required to wear an mask.

The University of Bamberg Library provides daily updates on any further changes as well as information on the services it can offer at www.uni-bamberg.de/ub. If you have any questions, library staff can be reached by telephone, email or chat.

We ask that you please understand that access to the university's computer labs is currently limited due to ongoing protective measures. However, the PCs in the PC pools are available online.

 

Not all printing and copying machines connected to the central printing system "campusprint" are currently accessible. The machines located in the university’s branch libraries are available for use as long as the current restrictions allow. The printing and copying machines in all other buildings are accessible. You can find an overview of the locations here (in German). However, please note the respective buildings’ current (in some cases shortened) opening hours.

Please understand that until further notice, we can only provide limited access to student ID validation and top-up stations.

Validation and top-up services are available:

1) at the terminal located in the foyer of Kapuzinerstrße 25. This area is open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Here you can validate your ID card for the winter semester.

2) at the terminal located in the canteen of Feldkirchenstraße within the current opening hours (11.30 a.m. to 1 p.m.). You can top up your electronic purse here.

3) at the terminal in the ERBA building at An der Weberei 5. The main entrance to this building can be opened with a validated chipcard Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. You can top up your electronic purse here. Please note that you can only enter the building using a valid student card. To check whether your ID card is valid, look at the dates printed on the front of your card. If validation has already expired, please use the terminal located at Kapuzinerstraße 25 to revalidate your card.

Information concerning your semester public transport pass: Please note that in order to use public transportation as part of your semester ticket from October 1, 2020, you must carry a validated student ID card.

Yes. As of October 1, 2020, you will have to carry a validated student identity card to use public transportation.

Applications for government-funded interim financial aid for students in financial distress due to the coronavirus pandemic are possible again beginning with the month april. Grants of between 100 and 500 € per month in non-repayable aid can be paid to needy students.

The amount of aid depends on the individual financial situation of each student. Students can apply online for interim financial aid from April 2021 to September 2021. Grants will be paid to applicants for one month following approval. A new application must be submitted for the following month if necessary. Additionally, KfW Student Loans are being made interest-free and being opened to international students until the end of 2021. More information can be found on the KfW website.

The university board of management is aware that the current restrictions to public life may pose considerable financial challenges for many students who depend on a part-time job to finance their studies. If these challenges are so great that you find yourself in an existential emergency or are even considering dropping out of your studies, two university staff members are available for consultation:

Your data will of course be treated confidentially and - should this be necessary - only passed on to third parties with your consent.

A further contact person is Mariella Büttner from the Studentenwerk Würzburg. Among other things she can provide advice and consultation on corona-related changes to the Bafög laws, on existing employment contracts, job hunting, deferment of rent payments, student loans and grants/scholarships. Additionally, she can provide information on social benefits and altered regulations during the pandemic (e.g. changes to children's allowance, financial verification for international students...).

The Academy of Key Competencies and Academic Further Education (Akademie für Schlüsselkompetenzen und wissenschaftliche Weiterbildung)  regularly provides information on opportunities for students who would like to help others and get involved on a social level during the corona crisis. Additionally, the city of Bamberg has created a website with a regularly updated overview of various local aid organisations (neighbourhood aid and other groups).

Regulations concerning examinations and academic work

In-person examinations remain permissible in accordance with the applicable safety and hygiene regulations. All important information on this topic is summarised here.

Students with particular health risks verified by a doctor can apply with the responsible examining board for special examination conditions at any time – ad particularly now during the coronavirus pandemic. The Office of Examinations (centrally organised examinations) or the corresponding examiner (decentrally organised examinations) will help you with further questions.

If, in an individual case, it is not possible to wear a mask for health reasons, an application for exemption from the mask requirement must be submitted without delay, accompanied by a valid medical certificate stating in a particular, concrete and comprehensible manner the health conditions that make wearing a mask impossible. Otherwise, participating in the examination without a mask is not possible.

In the case of examinations organised by the Office of Examinations ( centrally organised examinations), the informal application and the relevant evidence must be sent to the Office of Examinations by e-mail without delay. In the case of examinations organised by the academic units themselves (decentralised examinations), the application must be sent to the academic unit in the same way.

The Office of Examinations has developed differentiated approaches for such cases in centrally organised examinations with the aim of ensuring the greatest possible protection against infection for both invigilators and other students. The office is also available for consultation and advice concerning decentralised examinations.

Instructors, in consultation with the Dean of Studies, can now grant both students from abroad and within Germany who cannot take part in an examination for objective Corona-related reasons an individual make-up date.

The alternative date must be applied for in written form with suitable evidence to the examiner immediately after the occurrence of the corona-related reasons. After consultation with the Dean of Studies, the examiner will announce the decision on an alternative date and, if necessary, the alternative form of examination in time.

Yes. Course and module examinations remain permissible in accordance with the applicable safety and hygiene regulations and can take place in person as well.

As per § 2 of the university's Corona Statutes (Corona-Satzung), deviations from course and examination formats are permissible if the originally intended teaching and/or examination format cannot be carried out as planned due to the corona crisis. Under certain conditions (see similar FAQ in the teachers section above), instructors may conduct online examinations (see the university's Corona Statutes, Corona-Satzung § 4 Abweichende Lehr- und Prüfungsformate). As a general rule, only individual oral examinations are affected by this possible special provision. In addition, a handbook for students is being prepared for the implementation of oral online examinations. This will be made available here soon.

Video-based seminar presentations (both marked and unmarked) required for course credit may be given in digital form, provided that in can be ensured that the work is the student's own.

The University of Bamberg’s Corona Statutes (Corona-Satzung) provide the option to choose alternative examination formats in certain circumstances. Any deviations from the original format must be announced in writing no later than four weeks after the start of the lecture period. In well justified exceptional cases, deviations may also be permitted at a later date, provided that the competence-oriented teaching and examination concept can be ensured. In individual cases, this option can still be used at short notice if instructors deem it appropriate. However, the choice of suitable examination formats and a good exchange of information with the students are of the utmost importance.

The following applies to university examinations:

  • Results of a completed examination will be evaluated. However, in the event of a failed examination, no failed attempt will be credited. Examinations failed due to attempted deception or plagiarism are excluded from this regulation.
  • Withdrawal is possible by not attending the examination. A failure to attend is therefore generally regarded as excused. A medical certificate is therefore not required. This also applies in cases where medical certification is required from a public medical officer. Please inform your examiner as soon as possible if you are unable to attend the examination, especially in the case of individual examinations.

These special regulations apply regardless of whether the individual student is undertaking an initial or repeat attempt. Cf. the university’s Corona Statutes (Corona-Satzung der Universität Bamberg).

Review of centrally organised examination results from the 2021 summer semester will be possible from 8 November to 12 November 2021, subject to compliance with hygiene regulations.

The evaluation can only be reviewed in electronic form and only upon written request. Further information on the procedure and the required request form can be found (in German) on the Office of Examinations website.

Please note that the request must be submitted in the original, i.e. emails, scans and the like are not sufficient.

Yes, you must be enrolled until the last required examinations have been completed.

As the Office of Examinations remains closed to the public, all requests, applications, medical certificates, documents and hard copies of all BA and MA theses must be sent via post. As an alternative, you may hand deliver an addressed, sealed envelope to the university mail office postbox. Postmarks will serve as proof of having met deadlines.

Even in cases of electronic transmission, theses and term papers must be submitted by the end of the next regular work day.

The more stringent lockdown implemented in mid-December has made the conditions for writing theses even more difficult.

The following applies to bachelor's and master's theses: The procedures for extending the completion deadlines for theses are regulated in the study and examination regulations. An individual application for a deadline extension which references the problems caused by the coronavirus situation is required here. Provided that the required literature cannot be ordered online or is not available online, please submit a request for suspension of the completion period to your examining board. The University Executive board asks that, in addition to the extension options already provided for in the examination regulations, examining boards comply with this request by granting an additional four-week deadline extension upon application until the end of the current winter semester. If a deadline extension is requested, this will have no influence on evaluation and marking.

The following applies to term papers: Provided that the required literature cannot be ordered online or is not available online, please submit a justified request for suspension of the completion period to your instructor/examiner. The University Executive Board recommends that all instructors/examiners accept such requests and grant a four-week extension for the time being. If a deadline extension is requested, this will have no influence on evaluation and marking.

IMPORTANT: If your new deadline will happen to be during the summer semester, it is essential that you are enrolled for the summer semester!

All examination regulations provide that Bachelor's and Master's theses must be submitted to the Office of Examinations only in bound copies as well as in unalterable machine-readable form.

Since the production of bound copies may not be possible due to the closure of copy stores, printers, etc., Bachelor's and Master's theses can be submitted to the Office of Examinations in purely electronic form as an e-mail attachment (pdf or zip format), provided that the deadline is met until further notice. To meet the deadline, the date of receipt of the message applies. The functional e-mail addresses of the Office of Examinations are set up for the data volumes. Please send your papers to the following e-mail addresses according to your faculty or subject affiliation:

If this is not possible for you for technical reasons, please submit your work by post to the Examinations Office on a data carrier (DVD/CD-ROM/USB stick). To meet the deadline, the date of the postmark applies. There are two ways of postal delivery:

Bound copies must be submitted to the Office of Examinations within 14 days of the opening of the copy stores, printers, etc. The other provisions of examination law remain unaffected. In particular, the electronic version must also be provided and submitted with the signed affidavit.

As per the university’s Corona Statutes (Corona-Satzung) § 3 Abs. 3, the following applies: If it can be verifiably established that a dissertation cannot be published within the period stipulated by the respective doctoral regulations due to restrictions on public life or other effects of the coronavirus, the period for publication of the dissertation may be extended by a maximum of twelve months in individual cases. This also applies to particular exceptional cases in which the deadline has already been extended by the head of the responsible doctoral committee.
