Alternative Wege zur Hochschulreife und soziale Disparitäten beim Hochschulabschluss

Bamberg. Leibniz-Institut für Bildungsverläufe: LIfBi Working Paper No. 88

Abstract

Since the 1960s, more and more opportunities to reach higher education eligibility beyond the Abitur certificate from the traditional Gymnasium have been established in the German education system. We ask to what extent these alternative pathways are connected to social disparities along the way to higher education. We provide a systematic theoretical discussion of the social mechanisms that are triggered by the existence of these alternative pathways and that influence the formation of social inequalities. In addition, we present descriptive empirical analyses based on the adult cohort of the German National Educational Panel Study (NEPS). We consider the association between social background and pathway to higher education eligibility, the association between pathway to higher education eligibility and the transition to higher education, and the association between the type of higher education eligibility and higher education completion. We observe social disparities at each of these transitions. The disparities are partially mediated through the pathway to higher education eligibility, but are also visible within the different pathways
