Old Town: The Making of Historic Cityscapes in International Contexts

The European city is a success story once again. Globally, urban districts with a historic character are being created. Apart from renovating and restoring, the focus is increasingly on building new historic ensembles – differentiating between historic city centers and their replicas and surrogates seems to have become irrelevant. Which sources feed this movement? Which traditions of urban planning are its godparent? Particularly, the position of the heritage studies must be reevaluated since they have been partaking in the creation of these “new” and “made” historic districts in a highly ambivalent way beginning with the movement for homeland protection [Heimatschutzbewegung] to the period of reconstruction after WWII up to postmodernism and current reconstruction projects. The project aims at grasping the heterogenous phenomenon of the “made” historic cities in more detail.
