Choosing Prime Ministers: What Criteria do Parties Use When Nominating a Top Candidate?

Democracy is about delegation and accountability. In contemporary parliamentary democracies, citizens delegate power on MPs and these on governments. While political parties keep both on tabs. Which criteria use political parties to choose their candidates? On the one hand, legislative candidates have been widely studied within political science. However, those aspiring to the chief executive office have just been studied in presidential democracies. In parliamentary democracies, who are those aspiring to the prime ministership? Which criteria do political parties use to choose them? This still constitutes nowadays one of the main black boxes political science faces.

My thesis argues that parties value electoral and post electoral features of prospective candidates. Electoral features refer to prospective candidates’ vote-drawing abilities, while post electoral ones point to which policies can they deliver once in government. Traditional criteria points the former as the most salient factor while new approaches like the Presidentialization of Politics prompts the increasing importance of the first factor. To get throughout the internal decision-making processes parties do, the focus will be pointed on the party chairmen, as the traditional top-candidates by default. Methodologically the thesis is framed on a mixed-methods nested approach.
