Cornel University, Founding and Deputy Editor of the Sociological Science
The Peer-Review Process
"Reviewing papers is not only a necessary service to the discipline -- it can help you improve your own research. It’s also a skill that new scholars tend to learn through osmosis and trial-and-error rather than through explicit training. In this workshop, I’ll try to demystify the peer review process, offer tips on how to write constructive reviews, and identify some of the common pitfalls of papers that lead to rejection or request for significant revisions. I’ll also talk briefly about how papers change in the peer review process, and what to do when you receive reviews on your own papers. As a disclaimer: the content of my talk has not been vetted by peer review, but rather is based on my observations as a founding editor and current deputy editor of Sociological Science."

INTERNAL MINI-WORKSHOPS
.........................................................................................................................................................
Organizing your own Doctoral Workshop
BAGSS supports doctoral fellows in organizing workshops in the subject areas covered by the School. Such workshops will typically need to be of sufficient interest to more than one pillar. Typically, those workshops include some sort of conference panel discussion as well as lectures upon method or subject specific skills. An implementation of a “Keynote Speech” as BAGSS Monthly Lecture is also possible. Proposals will be evaluated competitively once per semester in terms of quality and the volume of funds requested from the executive committee. Consequently, students have to apply for grants, officially. All necessary documents can be found on the BAGSS Intranet or contact courses.bagss(at)uni-bamberg.de for more information. Please also contact the scientific coordinator for feedback before handing in the proposal.
.........................................................................................................................................................
Research Poster Presentation
It is always nice to have an up to date or fresh presentation of our doctoral student’s current work! It also helps themselves to present their work ad-hoc in case they need to do so. Within the intranet, you can choose between three templates and adjust them to your needs. If there are questions regarding the style and content of your poster, please contact courses.bagss(at)uni-bamberg.de. The same procedure applies for printing the poster.
.........................................................................................................................................................
Mentoring Programme
Based on the feedback of doctoral students the management team started to create a structured mentoring programme for current and new doctoral students. Every doctoral students can become a mentor, a mentee or both.
We are always looking for mentors for our new doctoral students that help incoming early stage researchers to familiarize themselves with the new environment in Bamberg and the university. We would therefore kindly ask you to contact us, if you would like to become a mentor for a new doctoral student. It would be particularly helpful to our new international members to have an experienced doctoral fellow as a guide and mentor during the first months to help with orientation. Please write to courses.bagss(at)uni-bamberg.de
+ More information about the Mentoring Programme
.........................................................................................................................................................
Alumni Events
Several Alumni Events took place in order to give doctoral students the opportunity to see where our alumni are now working. The main goal of these events are to present possible career paths after graduation and to build possible important networks. The events are open to all doctoral students as well as (under-) graduate students.
