// DISSERTATION PROJECT
Atypical Educational Careers and Non-traditional Educational Paths in Germany and Their Impact on Social Inequalities. An Analysis of Recent NEPS Data.
The dissertation project deals with atypical educational pathways and their impact on educational inequality and social mobility. Besides the traditional secondary school tracks (lower, intermediate, and upper secondary schooling) the German education system offers a variety of additional institutional options to attain secondary school qualifications and to gain access to academic education. These atypical educational pathways are often used to upgrade the original educational outcome after a first school career. Non-traditional pathways were introduced during the educational reforms 1969/1970 to open up the highly stratified German school system and to reduce educational inequality. Now 45 years after the reforms, little is known about the relevance of such atypical pathways or about the social inequalities they harbour.
