Roma Nomination and Mainstream Political Parties

Despite an overt recognition of the political under-representation of Roma groups in Romania, as well in Eastern Europe, most of the studies focus either on the ability of Roma political parties to mobilize Roma voters or on the “minority protection regimes” adopted by states. Still, it leaves the involvement of political parties unexplored, identified by previous studies on minority groups as the main gatekeepers which constraint the opportunity of representation for these groups, although Roma represents an important part of the electorate meanwhile political parties face challenges as electoral volatility, low levels of party identification and party membership. This study seeks to fill this gap in the literature and investigates why mainstream political parties nominate Roma candidate on their lists. The party level analysis is backed by a combination of theories from the politics of representation and ethnic studies, being tested five hypotheses about potential intra and inter party factors: time of leadership change, party size, party competition, presence of Roma political parties, Roma size. The study focuses on Romania, in the context of 2016 local elections, examining five mainstream political parties.
