// DISSERTATION PROJECT

The temporal development of the importance of final grades for the labour market success.
An empirical analysis of the consequences of grade inflation in Germany.

The dissertation project examines the association between social origin and labour market success of German academics that is mediated by educational attainment (‘OED triangle’) in a longitudinal perspective. The project is guided by the question how the value of higher education credentials changed in the past years and how this change influences the association between social origin and status destination. For this purpose, the single associations within the ‘OED triangle’ are analysed to clarify if the graduates’ status destinations (OD) and their educational achievement (OE) in higher education are depending on their social origin and to what extent different graduation degrees influence status destination (ED). The most central and important aspect of this dissertation project is the treatment of education as positional good which basically means to measure educational credentials as well as stratification parameters within higher education (field of study, type of institution, type of degree and examination grade) relative to other credentials. Through the recalculation into a relative measure, it is possible to evaluate value changes over time.
