Smartphone-based Assessment: A Theoretical Framework, Psychometric Modeling and Substantial Issues in the Assessment of Declarative Knowledge

Crystallized intelligence (gc) is a crucial factor in consensual intelligence theories. Declarative knowledge is arguably a core aspect of gc and the method of choice for its measurement. However, the substantial questions on the nature of gc, for example concerning the dimensionality of knowledge, remain unanswered. Previous studies on the dimensionality of declarative knowledge often investigated specific samples such as Psychology freshmen using item samples that were small in comparison to the present item pool. In order to administer a very large item pool covering a very wide range of subject areas, we used a smartphone-based approach, which also allowed us to gather data from a more broadly varying sample. We developed a mobile app to administer questions from a pool of over 4,000 knowledge items from 34 subject domains such as technology, art, religion, and law, to examine the dimensionality of declarative knowledge. The app is freely available online for iOS and android systems and participation is voluntary, without restrictions concerning duration, daytime, or testing context. Participants get instant feedback on their overall performance as well as on their performance in the specific subject areas.

With this dissertation project, we want to provide insights in the advantages and potential limitations of smartphone-based knowledge assessment. First, we want to investigate whether there are score differences in between proctored and unproctored ability assessments due to the lack of control over the test situation in unproctored online assessments. Second, we want to investigate whether it is possible to detect cheating using auxiliary data that can be recorded using smartphone-based assessment. Third, we want to use the data obtained using the mobile quiz app to investigate the dimensionality of declarative knowledge. We will integrate the findings in a broader framework of technology-based ability assessment.
