How to apply

The Master’s programme is open to international candidates; it aims to reach individuals from developing countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America as well as from the international context of development cooperation.

It is designed to fit the professional demands of management staff or persons involved in teacher training, school administration and development services in the field of education.

This programme is specifically developed to respond to the skills shortage with regard to quality development in education in the Great Lakes region of Sub-Saharan Africa. Candidates from different parts of Africa, Asia and South America can also apply for the programme.

 

The Master’s programme addresses graduates with

  •     A Bachelor’s degree (at least 180 ECTS or equivalent) in the humanities, cultural studies or social science or
  •     A Bachelor’s degree (at least 180 ECTS or equivalent) in teacher training; graduates from teacher training programmes of universities and teacher training colleges for all types of schools (primary and secondary schools) will be admitted.
  •     At least three years of professional experience in schools excluding the traineeship/preparatory teaching period or
  •     At least three years of professional experience in development agencies in the field of education.
  •     Sufficient language skills in English to be able to follow the course of studies.
  •     Other appropriate qualifications may be considered on an individual basis.
  •     Working in the education system or in a field related to education is an indispensable condition.
  •     Candidates exceeding the age of 40 have to justify their motives in a letter.

Students should have a background from heads of schools or teachers training colleges or those responsible for in-service teacher training, university teachers who train future teachers, to heads of school departments in different church administrations. In addition, education specialists who are working for NGO’s, government officials dealing with improvement of education quality, local educational authorities and school administrators can also apply.

Application information

There are four different ways of participating in the Master’s programme “Educational Quality in Developing Countries”, each having its own application procedure.

Candidates can apply

(a) For a full participation in the programme,

(b) For an IMPEQ scholarship,

(c) A full participation in the programme without scholarship (having to pay for the programme themselves or finding other financial resources)

or

(d) For participation in certain modules only.

All candidates have to pass the academic admittance at Otto-Friedrich-Universität no matter which participation they apply for.

 

The course of the application

Candidates send in their dossier of application as pdf-file (please consider the deadlines!).

If the complete dossier of application is received in due time, there will be a phone interview lasting at least 20 minutes.

If the phone interview is passed, the dossier will be forwarded to the academic assessment center.

Candidates receive notice of their acceptance into the programme as soon as possible.

Applying for full participation

The application for the cycle 2019-2021 will open at 15 August 2018.

Criteria for the selection process are:

    Academic achievement

    Quality of the letter of motivation

In case of equal quality, priority is given to women and members of Bread for the World - Protestant Service for Development programmes in the educational sector.

Candidates exceeding the age of 40 need to justify their motives in a letter.

Candidates should receive a feedback of whether they have been accepted in the programme around the end of May 2019.

Candidates wishing to apply for the participation in the Master’s programme need to prepare the following:

  •     Letter of motivation
  •     Curriculum Vitae
  •     Authenticated copies of certificates from secondary schools
  •     Authenticated copies of university certificates (or other certificates, such as transcript of records, diploma supplement) in German, English or French translation
  •     Authenticated copies of language certificates
  •     Confirmation by the employer that the candidate will be given the necessary time and infrastructure to participate in the MA programme (see download form “Confirmation by Employer”)
  •     Two letters of recommendations (see download form “Letter of Recommendation”)
  •     Financial plan or statement of funding
  •     Health Certificate (see download form “Health Certificate”)
  •     Statement of willingness to work on weekends (see download "Willingness to work on weekends")
  •     A competence portfolio including:

1.     A short, one-page profile of the organization where the candidate is working;

2.     A summary of all areas of activity and responsibilities after the university degree or teacher training certificate, taken from the CV; (see download form “Education”)

3.     A summary of all courses in post-graduate and continued education in which the candidate participated after the end of his training/degree; (see download form “Education”)

4.     A summary of all courses in post-graduate and continued education which the candidate has held after the end of his training/degree; (see download form “Education”)

The language of instruction is English.

Sufficient knowledge of English to be able to follow the course of studies is therefore indispensable.

Language skills are tested during the assessment.

As the Master's programme "Educational Quality in Developing Countries" is a programme of continuous education, academic fees apply:

The tuition fee amounts to 2,500€ per semester, totalling in 10.000€ for the whole programme.

Additional costs are added for travel expenses, board and lodging, insurance, etc. Depending on the origin of the student, the amount may amount up to 17,000€.

The total cost of the two year programme may go up to 27,000€ per student.

Please also check with your local government, church and NGOs for additional scholarship options.

 

All students are charged the same rate of tuition fee for the IMPEQ. Tuition fees cover the cost of your master’s study at the University and include charges for registration, tuition, supervision, learning materials, examinations and graduation. The fee is 10.000 Euro for the whole programme. This amount is only for the courses and should be paid in before the programme starts.

In addition to tuition fees, students will need money for the personal living costs including visa application and visa, accommodation, health and travel insurances, laptop, food, international and local travel. These expenses will be up to 17.000 Euro. This amount should be also paid in before the programme starts.

For the self-sponsoring candidates please do not forget to add your confirmation of payment from your bank or from the third party sponsors.
