Admission

BAGSS invites applications from highly qualified graduates from the fields of Sociology, Psychology, Educational Science, Political Science, Economics, and Statistics. Qualified graduates of related subjects with a strong Social Science background are also encouraged to apply.

BAGSS is firmly committed to the goal of gender equality and encourages applications by women. The University of Bamberg is a certified family-friendly university which offers comprehensive advice on reconciling family and work life.

Requirements

Candidates must hold a Master's degree (or equivalent) in one of the aforementioned subjects or be very close to completion. At the University of Bamberg, outstanding graduates from an appropriate BA program can apply for fast-track access. The fast-track option allows early admission to the school, with formal access depending on the completion of a suitable Master's degree at the University of Bamberg. (For further information, please contact us directly.)

Applicants must have an excellent command of German or English. If neither of these languages is your native tongue, you may be asked to supply proof of proficiency.

How to Apply

Before submitting a formal application, we recommend that you first contact a possible supervisor (although this is not a precondition). Please send an e-mail stating your interest in pursuing doctoral research at BAGSS and include your CV as well as an abridged version of your research proposal (see below).

Full applications need to comprise the following:

  • a one-page cover letter;
  • a dissertation exposé of no more than ten pages proposing a clear research question, providing a state of the art review of the extant literature, and outlining the methods to be employed;
  • an up-to-date CV;
  • copies of your academic degree certificates;
  • two letters of recommendation.

Applications may be written in English or German. All documents need to be submitted as PDF files (click externer Link folgt here for a free software to convert documents into PDFs). Please send your application - except the letters of recommendation - to philipp.kuntz(at)uni-bamberg.de. Your academic referees must e-mail their letters directly to the same address.

The deadline for applications is January 15 (applications for the summer semester) or June 15 (applications for the winter semester).

Please note that only applications satisfying the above requirements will be considered. In case of further questions, we kindly ask you to first have a look at the FAQ. For remaining questions, please feel free to contact us

We are looking forward to receiving your application!

Selection of Candidates

Admission to BAGSS is a highly competitive process with appropriate consideration for diversity and equal opportunities. The two main criteria are the candidate's proven record of academic excellence on the one hand, and BAGSS' ability to ensure competent, research-led supervision on the other. Review of applications will be overseen by BAGSS' Executive Committee.

Once you submitted an application, we will send you an acknowledgement of receipt within two working days. We will inform you about the outcome of the review process as soon as possible (usually, three weeks after the deadline). Shortlisted candidates may then be invited for interviews conducted by at least two potential supervisors (in case of international students, a video conference suffices).
