Welcome to the homepage of the Bamberg Graduate School of Social Sciences (BAGSS)!

BAGSS was established in 2010 to provide exceptionally qualified doctoral students and post-doctoral scholars with an excellent, research-active, supportive and structured working and learning environment, currently focusing on two broad and interrelated areas of the Social Sciences:

1)    Education, personal development, and learning – with particular reference to the

  • conditions for educational attainment, personal development and learning opportunities across a person’s life course;
  • the processes of learning and educational attainment; and
  • the consequences education, personal development and learning have for individuals, families, and labor markets.

2)    Governance, institutional change, and civic involvement in a transnational context – with particular reference to

  • some of the major transnational challenges facing nation states such as a globalizing economy, the adjustment of welfare states and migration;
  • the effectiveness of national, subnational, transnational, and supranational actors in responding to fiscal, labor market, educational, and environmental policy challenges;
  • the evolution and effectiveness of transnational institutions such as the European Union; and
  • the political responses of citizens to these changes.

The BAGSS program will be rolled out fully from the Summer Semester 2011. These pages – which are still under construction – are designed to assist you in finding essential information about the

  • educational opportunities;
  • the admissions process at BAGSS;
  • specialisations and contact details of doctoral advisors involved in BAGSS.
