Getting Started in Bamberg

This website informs you about the steps to take after you have been accepted for the European Joint Degree in English and American Studies with Bamberg as your home university.

Registration

Once you have received your letter of acceptance (but only after that!), you will also have to follow the general application procedures of Bamberg University indicated on the university website - for a direct link, click here. On that site, you will also find all the necessary documents.

Planning your Courses

Please consult the information about the curriculum and the module handbook on this website for detailed information on the contents of the programme. The "Synopsis of the Programme" contains a diagram showing on one page what kind of courses you ought to take.

Please see your programme counsellor in one of her office hours in order to discuss your learning agreement for the programme and the timetable for the classes you wish to take. You can find the office hours of the programme counsellor and the co-ordinator (Prof. Dr. Christoph Houswitschka) under "contact." If you are unable to attend the regular office hours, you may write an e-mail and arrange another appointment.

Catch-up Classes

Some students have been asked to take catch-up classes in literary or cultural studies or in linguistics. Your student counsellor will advise you on the courses you can take as catch-up classes. You must successfully pass these courses before you can obtain credits in the regular seminars in the respective core subject area. (You can, however, already attend lectures or "Übungen" in the respective core subject and earn credits there).

Registering for Courses

Registration for courses is via our online registration system "FlexNow". Registration starts at the end of July for the winter semester and in mid-Febuary for the summer semester. It ends on the day of the first session of class. Upon registration at Bamberg University, you will receive a package with your access code to the FlexNow system. Since some courses can only allow a limited number of participants, we advise you to register in time. If you know that you will receive your FlexNow access data rather late, e.g. when coming from abroad, it may be a good idea to write to the class instructor beforehand about your interest in signing in for the course. You'll find information on the courses and on how to get in contact with the respective instructors on Univis, the university's virtual calendar.

Please contact your programme counsellor if you encounter any difficulties.

!!!VERY IMPORTANT!!! LANGUAGE PLACEMENT TEST

All students who are not native speakers of English and who take up their study at Bamberg for any programme of English Studies MUST take part in a diagnostic English language test. This test will assign you to the language proficiency class that is most suitable for you.

Taking part in this test is compulsory for all students whose native tongue is not English. So please make sure to be in Bamberg in time!

Daily Life

You will find useful links on various matters concerning daily life under "General Questions" on this website. The leaflet of the "Akademisches Auslandsamt" is particularly useful.

For those of you who can already find their way around on a German-speaking website, externer Link folgt Feki.de may be a good starting point. The "Diskussionsforum" (can be found under "Community ERleben") includes, among other things, a thread on finding student accomodation.
