Applying for the Joint Degree with Bamberg as Home University

Students can apply for the Joint Degree if they have completed at least the equivalent of a Bachelor’s or Diploma degree in English and/or American Studies. Applicants with degrees in other philologies may be considered if their preparation is deemed appropriate by both the Joint Degree Programme and the specific institution to which they are applying for admission as their home university. However, students applying for the Joint Degree with Bamberg as home university have to meet (1) the general conditions of the Joint Degree consortium and (2) conditions at Bamberg:

(1) general conditions/prerequisites:

(In the online application process, you need to provide the following documents:)

  • 2 academic letters of recommendation (in English)
  • University diploma + English translation
  • Diploma supplement + English translation (if provided by your university)
  • Transcript of your university records + English translation
  • Curriculum Vitae (in English)
  • Letter of motivation for participation in the Joint Degree Master's Programme (in English)
  • Language proficiency: since the language of instruction in the Master’s Programme is English, students who do not possess C2 level (CEFR) of English must document their level of competence in English with a language certificate. Either of the following minimal scores in one of the standardised English language tests must be achieved: TOEFL: minimum of 600 (paper test) or 250 (computer test) or 100 (online test); IELTS: minimum of 7.0; (Please note that the scores of these tests are only valid for two years. TOEFL or IELTS scores that have been received more than two years before the application deadline therefore can not be considered!)

(2) special conditions for Bamberg as home university

  • school leaving certificate (with which the student is eligible to study at a university in his/her home country)
  • At Bamberg, special conditions apply for students who have earned their certificate(s) in one of the following countries:
    • China, Vietnam, Mongolia: an APS certificate has to be provided
    • Georgia, Iran: a confirmation by the office for the recognition of foreign certificates/degrees has to be provided

Contact details for the respective offices are provided by the International Office of the University of Bamberg in the download "Information for Prospective International Students" ( see download section at the International Office site; N.B.: the requirements for German language proficiency do NOT apply to international students in the Joint Degree programme!)

Originals of all your documents must be provided upon enrolment at Bamberg University!

The deadline for applications is 15th April (receiving date!). For Bamberg home students, the programme then begins in mid-October.

If accepted to the programme, you will receive both a letter of acceptance from the consortium in Graz and a welcome package from our Enrolment Office ("Studentenkanzlei"). The Enrolment Office will ask you to fill in another form and provide some additional documents, which is more or less a mere formality, though.
