Call for Papers for the Conference "Comparative Adult Education 2012".

Planning a Paper?
If you are working in the field of international comparative adult education we highly encourage you to participate and submit a proposal, whether or not you have been affiliated with ISCAE previously.

We invite interested colleagues to participate with papers from one (or more) of the following categories:

  • comparing one or more topics of adult education/andragogy in two or more countries (= comparative study sui generis).
  • dealing with questions about the theory, principles, methods, and other topics related to comparison in the international context of adult education (= critical reflection of comparative methods/principles).
  • reflecting and sharing experiences gained in international research endeavours in which they faced problems, promises, challenges and pitfalls typical for comparative studies (= lessons learned).
  • reporting developments, new publications, "state of the art" of comparative research in a given country or region or language (= reviewing).
Please let us know as early as possible (can be "tomorrow") if you tentatively plan to present a paper by mail or through our online registration. It helps us to plan, and perhaps we can be of help to relate your paper to other papers. Do not hesitate to direct additional inquires to Prof. Dr. Jost Reischmann.

Deadlines:
Mail us a one-page-proposal (500-600 words) as early as possible - not later than May 12, 2012 - to jostR@ISCAE.org. It will be reviewed by members of the ISCAE Scientific Committee. We understand that you need fast feedback for your travel planning and applying for funding. Notification of acceptance will be given within short time after you sent it to us (usually 7-10 days); not later than June 15, 2012.

The deadline for submission of complete papers (of no more than 5000 words) is September 15, 2012. For presentation time and style click on the left yellow "More Info" and "Hints for Presentation".

Theoretical / methodological background:
Comparative Adult Education research means to explicitly identify and analyze similarities and differences in two or more countries and includes the attempt to understand why the differences and similarities occur and what they tell us about adult education in these countries. This also includes reflections about the methods, strategies, and concepts of international comparison, and summarizing reports about developments in the international comparative field on a material or meta level.

ISCAE has already developed a rich background on theories, methods, and examples of comparison. We strongly suggest to refer to these experiences - standing on the shoulders of prior comparatists allows a wider and better grounded perspective.
These experiences are easily accessible in the two books published bei ISCAE, reporting the results from our first four conferences. We recommend presenters to refer to the state of art documented in these books:

Book 1: Comparative Adult Education 1998. The contribution of ISCAE to an emerging field of study. Eds. Jost Reischmann, Michal Bron Jr & Zoran Jelenc, Ljubljana 1999, ISCAE & SIAE. The whole book can be downloaded here.

Book 2: Comparative Adult Education 2008. Experiences and examples. Eds. Jost Reischmann & Michal Bron Jr. Frankfurt am Main, 2008, Peter Lang Verlag. ISBN 978-3-631-58235-0. Volume's table of content and introduction can be downloaded here. If you want the whole book: Click here to order the book
