Lesung Hugo Hamilton
Am 10. November 2010 war Hugo Hamilton zu Gast in Bamberg. Bereits zum zweiten Mal besuchte der irische Schrifsteller den Lehrstuhl für Englische Literaturwissenschaft, um im Rahmen des Hauptseminars "Recent British and Irish Drama" aus seinen Romanen zu lesen und über seine Erfahrung als Sohn eines irischen Vaters und einer deutschen Mutter zu sprechen.
Einem internationalen Publikum bekannt wurde Hamilton durch seine Memoiren. In The Speckled People (2003, dt. Gescheckte Menschen) beschreibt er seine Kindheit im Dublin der 1950er Jahre zwischen zwei Kulturen, "lederhosen and Aran sweaters, smelling of rough wool and new leather, Irish on top and German below."
Hugo Hamilton las den Seminarteilnehmern und zahlreichen weiteren Gästen auch aus seinen jüngsten beiden Romanen vor, Disguise (2009) und Hand in the Fire (2010).
"His speech was unexpectedly unusual. He touched upon the topics that do not come to mind when you think about a bilingual person. I'd rather say he is bicultural and aware of interrelation of both cultures he grew up in, always longing to be British and speak English."
