The faculty of Information Systems and Applied Computer Sciences, which was established on 1 October 2001, is characterized by an interdisciplinary curricular layout that remains singular in the German-speaking countries. It combines the field of Information Systems (with its foundations in Economics and Computer Science) with a realm of Applied Computer Science focused on the arts and humanities, and also with classic subject areas pertaining to theoretical and practical Computer Science. The Information Systems, Applied Computer Science and Computer Science subject groups are each represented by four chaired departments or professorships. Synergy with the university’s main focus areas in the humanities, social sciences and economics and business administration is fostered by integrative course offerings and joint research endeavours.

In addition to the traditional Diplom programme in Information Systems (which has been offered since 1987 and can be pursued with a focus on Media Informatics), the faculty also offers a Diplom programme in Education in Business and Information Systems, a master’s minor in Cultural Computing and numerous other possible minors, required electives and optional subjects. In cooperation with the University of Duisburg-Essen, the master’s programme “Internet-based Further Education in Information Systems” is also offered. In the 2004/05 winter semester, bachelor’s programmes in Information Systems and in Applied Computer Science, as well as master’s programmes in Information Systems, Applied Computer Science and Education in Business and Information Systems were introduced. Since the 2012/13 winter semester the range of available courses related to computing and information technologies has been extended by a bachelor’s programme in Software Systems Science.

In December 2004, the faculty of Information Systems and Applied Computer Science elected its first faculty committee, effectively completing its foundational period.
