There are many factors to consider when choosing a place to study. First and foremost, there are decisions to be made based on the university and the degree programmes it offers. Then, also factors like university and community services, public transportation, recreation, the local housing market and cost of living all play a role in choosing a university as well as in a student’s broader academic experience.
With a population of about 70,000,
Bamberg is a comfortably-sized community in which you will feel at home quickly. Bamberg is a city where tradition is preserved – the historic old city has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1993 – and where modern life is embraced, as shown by the city’s many sculptures, such as those by Botero and Lüpertz.
Bamberg’s location in the Regnitz river valley, its seven hills, the Hain Park and its unique swimming centre on the river, and the close proximity to the
Franconian Switzerland and the
Steigerwald all contribute to the city’s appeal. And in 2012, the
Bavarian State Garden Show is being held in Bamberg.
The University of Bamberg is one of Bavaria’s oldest universities. It was founded in 1647, and is divided among a number of locations, many of which are situated in the city centre. In the autumn of 2012, the university will expand to the ERBA island where the Faculty of Information Systems and Applied Computer Sciences will be housed in a new building and inspiring environs.

Talking about transportation, getting to Bamberg is quite easy; the German rail system offers direct connections to many German cities and regions. Bavaria’s second largest city Nuremberg is less than an hour’s drive away. Since Bamberg’s entry into the
Nuremberg public transport network (VGN), it is possible to travel throughout large portions of Upper and Middle Franconia, and the Oberpfalz with one ticket. For travel in Bamberg and the Bamberg administrative district, a semester transport pass is covered in students’ semester dues.
The rental housing market in Bamberg is perhaps the city’s only downside. In recent years, rent prices have been continually on the rise and there are, especially in sought-after neighbourhoods, only a limited number of flats to be had. We strongly recommend that you begin looking for accommodation as early as possible.
Despite the difficult housing market, Bamberg is among the most affordable university cities in Germany. In a September 2011 study on living expenses conducted by the magazine “unicum”, Bamberg was only the 80th most expensive university town in the country.
