General Information about DSH

Admission, procedure and examination regulations

Matters concerning the admission, procedure und the content of the examination are regulated in the DownloadOrdnung für die Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang ausländischer Studienbewerber (DSH) at the Otto-Friedrich University Bamberg (version from September 30, 2005).
The DSH takes place twice a year, in each case prior to the beginning of the semester in March/April and September/October.

You can receive further information about the DSH-examination from the Akademisches Auslandsamt.

Why DSH?

In the DSH you should demonstrate that your knowledge of German is sufficient to study at a German university. Like at any other university in the Federal Republic of Germany, in Bamberg, this examination is held in accordance with the pdf Prüfungsordnung (PDF-file) enacted on the 8th of June 2004 by the Hochschulrektorenkonferenz.

How is the DSH structured?

Each part of the examination is described thoroughly on the page Structure of the DSH-examination.

To pass the DSH, you must accomplish at least 67% of the requirements in both the written and oral examinations. (Further information can be found in the Prüfungsordnung.)

When does the DSH take place?

The DSH takes place prior to the beginning of each semester (March/April and September/October).

Who can participate?

To participate, you must fulfil the following qualifications:

  • A minimum of 800 hours of instruction in German.
  • Admission to a degree program at the Otto-Friedrich University Bamberg (registration before July 15 for the winter semester, which begins in mid-October, and before January 15 for the summer semester, which starts in mid-April)
  • If you cannot verify the 800 hours of instruction in German required to take the DSH, but you can certify, by way of notarised certification, at least 400 hours of German instruction, you may take part in the DSH-preparation courses (subject to enrolment fees) offered during the semester.

How can you prepare for the DSH?

It is possible to prepare by way of private study using a sample test including answers and other preparation materials, and/or by participating in the semester DSH preparatory courses and in the three-week DSH-relevant German language prep course. All courses are subject to fees.

Tips concerning the preparation for the DSH can be found here.

What happens if you do not pass the DSH?

You can repeat the DSH. The necessary knowledge of the German language for enrolment in a degree program must be acquired within one year (two semesters).
