For postdoctoral researchers, framework conditions have changed significantly throughout recent years, as employment opportunities have become ever more diverse. Apart from the classic option of pursuing a “Habilitation” as a research associate assigned to a particular chair or university institute, other career paths have become increasingly important as means to qualify for a full professorship: Today, more and more researchers finance their academic endeavours with temporary, third-party-funded research projects. Quite a number of national and international research funding institutions financially support academics with various unique programmes and forms of funding. Whether a scholar is eligible to apply for a certain funding programme may depend on a number of factors – such as disciplinary background, age, professional experience and the scope of the proposed research project.
On a European level, the Seventh Framework Programme for research and technological development (FP7) is currently providing € 50.5 billion over a period of seven years (2007-2013). Researchers from all disciplines may apply for funds earmarked in several specific programmes which offer a wide range of opportunities to pursue individual or cooperative projects in various countries.
At the University of Bamberg, the research unit and the Trimberg Research Academy ( TRAc) cooperate closely and pursue the common goal of further promoting and attracting third-party-funded research. By means of offering advisory and conceptual support for researchers prior, during, and also after their application for funding, we aim at continuously improving the university’s research environment.
