On April 20, 2012, Dipl.-Psych. Raphaela Schneider presented the poster "Does empathic Robot Behavior enhance positive Emotions in Child-Robot Interaction?" at the 3rd International Workshop “Teaching robotics, teaching with robotics”, Riva del Garda, Italien.

The conference aims at presenting an overview of current European research on human development in all its varieties. LIREC was presented during a poster session on Wednesday, Aug 24th, 2011.The presentation focused on the experience of interacting with a robot which has been shown to be of a distinct quality as compared to people’s interaction experiences with other technologies (Young et al., 2010). Based on qualitative analyses from the “Pleo” study, the poster outlined four «typical» attitudes towards Pleo: (1) stable positive attitudes towards Pleo, (2) positive attitudes towards Pleo, which changed towards negativity during the interaction, (3) clear and stable negative attitudes towards Pleo, and (4) distinct ambivalence towards the robot. Results were discussed considering implications for the design of social robots.
The workshop aims at bringing together researchers in the field of Computer Sciences, Psychology, Cultural studies to discuss the state of the art in this field of research and explore the challenges in the future. The workshop will be a combination of paper presentations and extended discussion sessions. We encourage the submission of long (8-9 pages) and short papers (5-6 pages). The format of the submissions should be Springer (LNCS) accepted. It is intended to compile a special issue journal for this workshop.
To submit please go to: https://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=cmvc2011
Dates: Paper Submission July 1st 2011 / Workshop 14th September 2011

On June 15th selected guests were invited to University of Hertfordshire’s Robot House to view its latest robot developments. Beside talks given by Prof. Kerstin Dautenhahn and Nicolas Nova on current developments in social robotics, the matters were also intensely discussed by the audience (

The 3rd LIREC Review Meeting in Lisbon, PT, was organised by partner
INESC-ID from Monday, May 16th until Wednesday, May 18th, 2011. The reviewers appointed by the EU evaluated the project to make "good to excellent progress".
Call for papers! Workshop on Culturally Motivated Virtual Characters (CMVC. 2011) Reykjavik, ICELAND
Virtual characters can be used to enhance cultural understanding by making them culturally aware. In order to do this we can promote cultural influence to cognitive processes of perception, planning and the ability to react in a virtual world. In doing so the relationship between emotions and cultures is of significant importance. Theories related to emotional modulation, cultural differences and personality become the basis of modelling such virtual characters. This gives rise to number of issues to be looked at, e.g. how to model intelligent virtual characters so that they are culturally aware, making the interaction with these characters culturally motivated and to evaluate what are the effects of using cultures in virtual characters.

LIREC project meeting in Coimbra

New Member of GRIP
From today on, Alexandra Jentzsch will join the GRIP team. She studied psychology in Bamberg and investigated cognitive and non-cognitive determinants of complex problem-solving in her diploma thesis.

Human-Dog-Relationship as Metaphor for Human-Companion-Relationship
In the LIREC project, we use the relationships that people build towards dogs as a metaphor for investigating the relationships that people will build towards social robots in the future. Hence, GRIP is launching two studies in September 2010, investigating the relationship between dogs and their owners.
In the study “dog and owner” we investigate the personality of dog and owner, as well as the relationship between them and between the owner and other people. As a reward for participating (filling in a questionnaire, appr. 20 mins.) participants can receive on request written feedback on their “results”.
In the second study, future dog owners that are going to adopt a dog from a shelter, are accompanied during the first weeks of getting attached to their dog.
