Chair of British Culture

Profile

The Department of British Culture (Lehrstuhl Britische Kultur) is part of the School of English and American Studies (Institut für Anglistik und Amerikanistik). It is the smallest department of the School but still tries to offer a wide range of courses and other activities. With an emphasis on small classes and extra tutorials, we work closely together with our students and guarantee an excellent quality of education. Students can write BA and MA theses as well as dissertations on topics of their own choice. We have a lively culture of seminars, with opportunities for participation in events at the “Centre for British Studies”.

We provide research expertise in all of the major areas of English-language cultural studies. In tandem with a broadening of the field nationally and internationally, we offer courses in canonical and non-canonical culture, literature and film in English – whether in the Americas, Great Britain, or other English speaking countries. Many of our courses are interdisciplinary.

The teaching within the “British Culture” department is underpinned by the strong research activities of our members of staff, who also supervise postgraduate students. There is a well-stocked and friendly library with excellent support services.

Our mission

In addition to stimulating your enthusiasm for English-language culture worldwide, the programme wants

  • to give students a wider context for learning English-language culture(s), language and literature.
  • to provide broad perspectives on significant aspects of culture.
  • to use English-language culture to raise intercultural awareness.
  • to help students develop core skills for employment – analysis, criticism, writing and presentation.
  • to enable students to develop skills for the interdisciplinary study of culture.
