Registry Office

Will you be staying in Bamberg for more than two months? Then we would ask you to register with the city’s registry office as soon after your arrival as possible. You should bring your lease agreement with you. Registration is free of charge.

Registration is not required for a shorter stay.

Aliens Authority

If necessary, please apply with the Bamberg Aliens Authority for residence and work permits. Please note: As of 1 September 2011, Germany will introduce the new electronic residence and work permit.

Residence and work permits are generally not required for the following persons:

• Guest scholars from the EU, Switzerland, Norway and Liechtenstein. If you are staying for more than 3 months, please apply with the Aliens Authority for a certificate of free movement instead. You will need to bring proof of registration with the registry office and a copy of your employment or scholarship agreement.

• Guest scholars from Australia, Israel, Japan, Canada, South Korea and the USA who are not staying in Bamberg for more than three months.

All other visiting scholars should register for residence and work permits with the Bamberg Aliens Authority as soon after arrival as possible.

Please arrange an appointment with the Aliens Authority to do so.

Please see that you have already registered with the registry office before visting the Aliens Authority. Ideally, you should allow for two working days to pass between these two formalities.

The following documents are normally required for the residence and work permit registration:

• Proof of registration with the registry office
• Health insurance verification
• Labour or scholarship agreements
• Passport
• A biometric passport photo
• approx. €90-100 for registration fees
