Call for applications: doctoral positions/scholarships at BAGSS

The Bamberg Graduate School of Social Sciences (BAGSS)

invites applications for up to

5 doctoral positions/scholarships.

These positions are available from October 1st 2013 for three years (subject to satisfactory progress reviews after 12 and 24 months).

BAGSS is funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) as part of the German Excellence Initiative from November 2012 until October 2017. Research at the Graduate School will be conducted in four broad, interdisciplinary fields:

• education, personal development and learning from early childhood to adulthood
• education and social inequality across the life course
• human capital, labour markets and demographic structures and their impact on social inequality in modern societies
• governance, institutional change and political behaviour.

Qualifications and requirements:
We are inviting applications from highly qualified graduates from the fields of Sociology, Psychology, Educational Science, Political Science, Economics, Demography, and Statistics. Qualified graduates of related subjects with a strong Social Science background are also encouraged to apply. Candidates must hold a Master's degree (or equivalent) in one of the aforementioned subjects or be very close to completion. Successful applicants will be required to take up their residence in Bamberg, a city noted for its very high quality of life.

Remuneration for the doctoral positions is based on Grade E 13 TV-L (50%) of the German Public Service Salary Scale. There is a teaching obligation of two hours per week for one semester.

Holders of the doctoral scholarships receive a monthly stipend of 1,365 Euro, plus family allowances and child-care expenses in accordance with DFG guidelines where applicable.

Inaugural Lecture Prof. Trappmann

We cordially invite you to the inaugural lecture of BAGSS faculty member Prof. Trappmann on January 23. The title of Prof. Trappmann's presentation is "Die Untersuchung der Qualität von Befragungsdaten aus der Total-Survey-Error-Perspektive".

Guest lectures by Dr. Jenny Chesters

Dr. Jenny Chesters, Faculty of Education/University of Canberra, will give two guest lectures in November: 

• Tuesday, November 13, 4-6 p.m.: "The Australian Education System and Alternative Pathways into University"
• Tuesday, November 20, 4-6 p.m.: "Returns to Education for those who Return to Edcuation"

Both presentations will take place in Room 204, Wilhelmsplatz 3.
